Why Learn About Freedom of Information?

Freedom of information (FOI) places a duty on a range of public sector and linked organisations to share information. Doing this improves accountability, demonstrates openness and builds trust. However, FOI is complex. Navigating exemptions can be difficult, and other duties like maintaining a publication scheme are hard to get right.

Understanding how to recognise and comply with freedom of information requests is more than just a statutory duty. Failing to comply could lead to regulatory action, but could also result in reputational damage and difficult relationships. By learning about FOI you can build a solid compliance system that reduces bureaucracy and engages with the community you serve.

Why This Course?

The Freedom of Information training course from WuDo Solutions is led by experts with experience who have helped organisations like yours on the ground. They therefore know what works and what doesn’t, meaning this course goes much further than simply giving you knowledge of the FOI Act’s requirements. It’s how to as much as what, and why.

With a focus on practical, applicable skills and giving you the confidence to manage personal data effectively, while achieving your business needs, this course goes beyond simply knowing what FOI requires.

That’s why a significant part of the course focusses on action planning, and throughout the learning there are quizzes, case studies and Q&A sessions where people are encouraged to test what they are being taught against their own experience and systems. Unlike any other provider we also offer six-month’s post course support, completely free, to help ensure peoples new skills are successfully applied in the real world.

FAQs

Who should take this course?

Anyone who needs to understand how to handle freedom of information requests. This applies to people working in the public sectors and organisations covered by the Act due to public sector contracts. The kind of people who take this course include FOI officers, governance leads and senior managers.

Do I need a certain level of knowledge to take the course?

Simply being aware of FOI is enough. The course will process at your own pace and however you learn you can ask questions throughout to make sure you get the learning and skills you need. The six months’ post course support is there to help you apply your learning to your specific situation.

Won't we just end up with a big bureaucracy?

The aim of this course is to give you the skills you need to manage – and demonstrate – FOI compliance practically as part of your business as usual activity. We aim to make life easier, not fill your day with extra processes and hurdles to clear. You will have some things to do post-course, but you will also very likely realise that there are things you can stop doing, or do in a simpler way.

What does the post-course support involve?

Sometimes it isn’t easy to apply learning to the real world. To help ensure you can if you realise you do not understand something or have difficulty applying it your trainer will be available to coach you on how to get past any obstacles. They can help you if any challenges come up with real life scenarios. Get in touch any time, as often as you need to, within six months of your course date and we will help you.

Is further support available?

Yes. Sometimes course attendees ask us to review their data protection systems, audit compliance, or even act as their FOI Officer. If we can help via our consultancy services we would be delighted to discuss that with you.

What if we change our minds?

We understand circumstances and needs can change. With WuDo Solutions you can have a full refund, switch to an alternative date, or send an alternative participant up to the day before the course. Just get in touch to let us know.

Where are your venues?

Our open courses are held in central London, Birmingham or Manchester. The exact venue will depend on venue availability and the size of the cohort in attending.

What's the difference between the in person and virtual classrooms?

Both have the same content and the same trainer. The virtual classroom is wholly online so you can take part from anywhere and because it is virtual some of the exercises are slightly different. But the learning and the outcome are the same however you take the course.

Do I get certification?

On completion of the course you do get a certificate and CPD hours or points are available
