Conflicts of Interests Maturity Matrix

It is important for every organisation to develop effective conflicts of interests management systems. But, how do you know if your systems are good enough?  One thing you can do is to benchmark your systems and processes against the maturity matrix below.

Take a step back and use the content of the course to make a frank appraisal of where your current systems stand.

Then think about how you can drive improvements to become more mature and effective in the management of conflicts of interests. You should aim for at least level 4 (managed) in all six domains

Finally you should think about how you communicate your new and improved systems, and set expectations for compliance to develop a culture of good governance when it comes to conflicts of interests.

How the Maturity Matrix Works

The matrix covers six core areas within the field of conflicts of interests:

  • the declaration of interests

  • making decisions on declared interests

  • training

  • tackling fraud and bribery

  • managing conflicts of interests

  • assurance of your systems and processes

It then sets out five levels of maturity from “initial” – low levels of maturity – to “optimised” – the highest level. You can benchmark yourself against each domain by seeing which part of the matrix most closely describes your current position.

Finally, to improve, you can look at the descriptors of higher maturity in an domain and think about what you can do to achieve that level of maturity in that domain.

Naturally you should focus on those domains where you score the lowest.
