The Government has introduced a Data Protection Bill to Parliament that aims to make big changes to the UK GDPR.
Key changes that the Bill seeks to make include:
- changes to the role of the Data Protection Officer
- changes to statutory requirements like the Record of Processing Activity
- changes to the way lawful bases for data processing work, such as legitimate interests and consent
- changes to the data protection regime in the UK and the role of the Information Commissioner
Despite Brexit the UK is still able to share data freely with Europe. This is because the UK has a data adequacy certification from the EU based on our current Data Protection Act. There are concerns that the Bill puts this adequacy decision at risk.
However, the Bill seeks to make life a little easier for organisations large and small as well as address some inconsistencies with other legislation, primarily the Privacy and Electronic Communication Regulations.

After its first reading the Government consulted on the content of the Bill before brining it back in March.
